“Funeral Rites in Cameroon”

Our anthropological view of funeral rites in Cameroon is far from that of imperialist anthropologists or of missionary colonists, which instinctively evolved to better penetrate the inner workings of indigenous cultures, hunt them down, divert them from their aims, empty them of their resources, and then better dominate their production. We are situated in the theory of African anthropology, which revisits the cultural practices of the societies of this continent to identify their true cultural significance. This body of knowledge also aims to examine the influence of cultural forces of the other continents on indigenous societies and to question the conditions of their survival in today’s world of competition and multiple socio-cultural conflicts. Taking as basis for my study the funeral rites of the Bëti in Cameroon, our research strives to answer the following question: “In this era of globalization, how do Africans intend to restore and maintain peace in the continent and throughout the world?” The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate that the social milieus have always nursed social values capable of promoting peace and respect of individuals.
