Do wage employment and self-employment have differential empowerment impact on rural women in Africa? Empirical evidence from Central Ethiopia

内容

The empowerment discourse has historically evolved over time. The recent women’s empowerment approaches are giving less attention to the concept’s original transformative meaning focusing particularly on provision of services and resources which primarily include enhancing women’s income earning opportunities. The Ethiopian government has been undertaking several socio-economic and legal reforms since the early 1990s which have contributed to the recent socio-economic phenomena taking place in the country: women’s increasing entry into the labour force. The presentation gives an overview of women’s employment in Africa in general and focuses on an empirical study conducted in the rural central Ethiopia to examine how women’s participation in income earning activities impacts on their empowerment at micro level. Furthermore, it explains the differential empowering effect of wage employment and self-employment.
