21世紀COEプログラム「世界を先導する総合的地域研究拠点の形成」の集大成として、2006年11月に京都シンポジウム「総合的地域研究の新地平：アジア・アフリカからディシプリンを架橋する」（英タイトル "Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries and Re-visioning Areas Studies: Perspectives from Asia and Africa"）が開催される。ZFSは８つあるサテライト・セッションの１つを企画・運営した。
セッションタイトルは「Globalization and Locality in Southern Africa: A View from the Local Communities」である。
